From VIP to PIP.....Adjusting to life without a title.

Talk of what it means to retire is EVERYWHERE.

It's like when you see a new word for the first time, and then you see it everywhere.

What does it mean to retire?  With roughly 76 million boomers all doing it at the same time - there are probably 76 million different answers!

Today's article in the 𝗡𝗬 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 "𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝗻"?  highlights that while we all have a unique perspective on what it means to "retire" there are some common themes.

What I find interesting is that some of the things that I have struggled with the most are things that other people are loving about being "retired".

For me these two have been the most challenging:

⏲️𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲:  Some people LOVE having time to do what they want...no schedule or routine, while others of us (me included) live in mortal fear of having nothing to do and too much free time.

Creating new routines is important if you are a structured (understatement) person like me.   But how do you do this if you don't know how you want to spend your time?  Start with taking time to figure out what your "perfect day" looks like.

𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳:  𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗺 𝗜 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝘆 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗜'𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗲𝘀𝘁?

❓𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆:  The loss of who you "used to be" and the struggle to find who you will be now.

Some people LOVE having the ability to reinvent themselves, while others of us (me included) are struggling with going from what the article calls a VIP (hate this term, but you get the idea - someone who mattered ) to PIP (previously important person).

It's hard to redefine "who you are" but starting with defining your 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀 and thinking about your "𝗜𝗸𝗶𝗴𝗮𝗶" 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁.  𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳:

❤️ What is my passion? (what you love)

💼 What are you good at?

🌎 How can I use what I'm good at to do something the world needs?

💲Do I want to or need to be paid for what I do?

What I have learned over the last 3 years is that just like your "career" had a "path", your retirement will too!  Don't expect to have it all figured out on the first day after your last day of work.  BUT 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘀𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁!
